Wire EDM
Since Twin City EDM started in the EDM Wire Machining business, we have been recognized as the company that can perform the impossible. Difficult, complex Wire EDM precision component and parts have become our forte. Twin City EDM machines difficult parts for our customers with wire electrical discharge machining, or wire EDM.
Wire EDM Process Explained
The EDM Advantage is based on the underlying process of electrical discharge machining (EDM). The Wire EDM (WEDM) process uses a thin wire to supply the electrical current to machine electrically conductive materials.
Typically the part to be machined is mounted solidly in the Wire EDM machine using standard or custom tooling. At Twin City EDM we have the capabilities to design and develop the tooling needed to hold your parts for the Wire EDM process. When mounting the part there are two primary concerns: placement and conductivity.
Our tooling provides a way to place your parts in the Wire EDM machine in a precise location. The part to be machined must be located and held straight and square with respect to the wire being used to machine the pattern you require. Our technicians take time to carefully ensure your parts are machined straight and true.
The second concern when mounting parts for Wire EDM work is providing conductivity. The EDM Advantage describes how electricity is used to remove material. With Wire EDM this electrical current travels from the wire through the part being machined. Our tooling provides an electrical connection to allow the EDM process to occur efficiently and effectively.
All of the Wire EDM machines at Twin City EDM are capable of machining complex profiles by moving the wire independently above the part and below the part. Any profile you can imagine making by moving a wire through your part, we can machine with Wire EDM. The process is only limited by the angle of the wire.

Expectations when doing Wire EDM with us
Do not let the complexity of machining get in your way. Let us sort through the numerous machining processes with you.
To start working with you we would need to understand your part. This could be from a verbal description, a print, or a CAD design file. We will work with you to understand your requirements for finish, tolerances, and costs. Based on these requirements we will work to provide a solution utilizing the machining process that fits your needs.
Our customers have used our Wire EDM services for prototypes, high-volume production parts, and everything in between.
